Hello everyone, thank you for reading my anime/casual blog.
Just like any other Otaku or anime lover around the globe, I enjoy watching anime as much as others did. I always wanted to express my thoughts on certain anime series after watching them, hence I started to write reviews for anime series that I have watched, of course, when I’m free.
Here’s an article to explain my method of rating an anime. Well, It’s certainly not professional but rather personal and subjective.
- 90 – 100 pts = Masterpiece
- 80 – 89.9 pts = Excellent
- 70 – 79.9 pts = Great
- 60 – 69.9 pts = Good
- 50 – 59.9 pts = Decent
- 40 – 49.9 pts = Not Really Good
- 30 – 39.9 pts = Weak
- 20 – 29.9 pts = Bad
- 10 – 19.9 pts = Awful
- 0 – 9.9 pts = WORST EVER
- Dropped = Dropped
I believe there will be hardly any reviews below 30points because I would’ve destroyed my PC before I finish watching it.
Anime which I rated at least 60 points would be good enough and recommended to most of the people, but do take some time to read over the synopsis or my review to know whether it suits your type or not.
Story
This is a rather subjective and uncertain section. There are stories that I like but others may not like them… Some stories could make you laugh with them, but some couldn’t even make the humour common.
Factors which taken into account:
- Genre of anime (what type the story is, Action? Romance? Fantasy? Whether the content suits the theme or not.)
- Strong Plot? or Fan-Service? or both. (Depends on the genre of the anime, should they focus on seriousness or fan-servicing.)
- Story Details
- The progress of the story. (Distribution & Manipulation. To be simple, how they tell the story…)
- Inspiring / Memorability / Heart warming
“Happily ever after” ending don’t always earn extra points, “Kill them all” ending sometimes have higher points… what I seek is a GOOD story, I won’t complain if the ending is reasonable and acceptable.
Max point: 40 points.
Animation
Factors which taken into account are:
- The time the anime released (Don’t expect the anime released in year 1998 to have the same quality as one released in year 2008.)
- Type of the released anime, Movie? OVA? TV series? (movies are held to have higher quality than OVA, while OVA are held to have higher quality than TV series)
- Art. (is the production company doing it properly? Artwork, Colouring…)
- Details (the major and minor details of the animation. From a background image down to it’s every single sand.)
- Animation smoothness (natural and smooth animation.)
- Design. (character design, mecha design or whatsoever…)
I’m not an anime expert, I just follow the rule of “What I see is what I rate”. If the animation is well done, I rate it high. If it isn’t, then no.
Max point: 30 points.
Audio
Again, partially subjective to whether I just like it or not. However, I do pay attention to whether the music helps define or confuse the feel of the story. Is the soundtrack used suitable for the scene? How is the music quality? How do the voice actors perform? How do the theme songs appeal to me and etc.
Factors which taken into account are:
- Opening theme, Ending theme, Insert theme.
- BGM / Soundtrack.
- Seiyuu (voice actor)
Max point: 20 points.
Personal Rating
The remaining 10 points is given as bonus based on how I enjoyed the anime. The simplest rating among all the sections.
Point Calculation
- 40 points for Story.
- 30 points for Animation.
- 20 Points for Audio.
- 10 Points for personal rating.
40 + 30 + 20 + 10 = 100. Pretty simple isn’t it?
I agreed with the way you rate anime, John=D….Simple and effective…Nice work! Althought it is nt professional but it is reasonable!! I’m going to watch all the anime you rated 70pts above..Maybe I will feel a different way tat wat u think of the anime too=)..But who knows if we have the same taste as well =D..Salute you..My senpai XD
